Facing Parkinson’s: New Science, New Strategies, Real Lives

Parkinson’s disease affects more than one million Americans and is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s. While treatments have advanced, the disease remains complex, deeply personal, and without a cure. A critical question continues to drive research and public conversation alike: What can be done to prevent Parkinson’s or at least slow its progression?

This timely program brings together scientific expertise and lived experience to explore that question from multiple perspectives. Dr. Ray Dorsey, neurologist and co-author of The Parkinson’s Plan, joins Dr. Sara Ann Whittingham, Air Force veteran, physician, and person living with Parkinson’s disease, for a thoughtful discussion on prevention, care, and the future of Parkinson’s research.

Despite decades of study, Parkinson’s disease presents ongoing challenges for patients, families, clinicians, and researchers. In this conversation, the speakers will examine emerging research on prevention and disease progression, evolving models of care delivery, and the growing importance of patient perspectives in shaping research priorities and public policy. Together, they will highlight where progress is being made, as well as the gaps that still demand attention.

Dr. Ray Dorsey is Professor of Neurology and Director of the Center for Human Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Rochester Medical Center. A leading expert on Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, his work focuses on improving access to neurological care and developing innovative ways to deliver treatment. His research has been widely published and featured in national media.

Dr. Sara Ann Whittingham is a clinical faculty member at Northeast Ohio Medical University, an Air Force veteran, and a physician living with Parkinson’s disease. She serves on the Advisory Council on Parkinson’s Research, Care, and Services, providing guidance on national priorities for research, care models, and patient support.

Together, these perspectives offer a grounded, hopeful look at the path forward in Parkinson’s care and research.
