Don Potter Concert to benefit Thompson Health’s Healthcare Education Fund

Singer and guitarist Don Potter first gained a large following in the greater Rochester area during the late 1960s as a member of the Show Stoppers. ChamberFest Canandaigua

Friday, July 19, 2024 - 7:15 PM EDT

ChamberFest Canandaigua: Poets at the Piano

Tonight’s program is filled with mystery, longing, and virtuosity. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B-flat minor opens with a tense and melancholic prelude that gives way to a masterful fugue in five voices (one of only two fugues of this character in the entire Well-Tempered Klavier). Mozart’s Fantasie, left unfinished at the time of the composer’s death, is a temperamental and moody work in seven distinct sections. From the opening notes of the immediately recognizable Ballade No. 1, one understands why Chopin called it his “dearest work.” This daring work takes the Sturm und Drang movement to epic, dreamlike heights. Gershwin’s delightful “It Ain’t Necessarily So” gives way to Schumann’s rich and colorful Piano Quartet.

J.S. BACH: Prelude and Fugue in B-flat minor, from the Well-Tempered Klavier, Book 1, BWV 867

W.A. MOZART: Fantasie No. 3 in D minor, K397

F. CHOPIN: Piano Ballade No. 1 in G minor Op. 23

G. GERSHWIN: “It Ain’t Necessarily So”

Intermission

R. SCHUMANN: Piano Quartet in E? major, Op. 47

I. Sostenuto assai – Allegro ma non troppo

II. Scherzo: Molto vivace – Trio I – Trio II

 III. Andante cantabile

 IV. Finale: Vivace

ChamberFest Canandaigua

ChamberFest Canandaigua: Expanding the Score

Celebrating the finale of ChamberFest Canandaigua’s 20th Anniversary Season, we’re joined by conductor Evan Maccarello, a full orchestra, and a slate of incredible soloists for an exuberant evening of music. A young Mozart, eager to break the norms of Salzburg, blends the styles he had recently encountered on a Parisian tour in this completely innovative concerto for a modest orchestra and two soloists: violin and viola. Decades later, Beethoven similarly sought to elevate the piano trio as a soloist; a daring endeavor in balancing three extremely unique voices in an altogether virtuosic and vibrant work.

W.A. MOZART: Symphonia Concertante in E-flat Major, K. 364 (1779)

 I. Allegro maestoso

 II. Andante

 III. Presto

Artists: Evan Maccarello (conductor), Min-Young Kim (violin soloist), Jessica Thompson (viola soloist)

L.V. Beethoven: Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano in C Major, Op. 56 (1803)

 I. Allegro

 II. Largo (attacca)

 III. Rondo alla polacca

Artists: Evan Maccarello (conductor), Kevin Kumar (violin), Amy Sue Barston (cello), Jessica Choe (piano)
